Postgraduate Education


The postgraduate education at the School of Stomatology of Shandong University currently includes a 3-year Master degree program, a consecutive (5+3)-year Bachelor & Master degree program, a 3-year Doctor degree program, a consecutive (3+3)-year Master & Doctor degree program. The aim of the various programs is to train students to become competent dentists or scientific researchers to meet the expectations of their future patients and communities.


3-year Master degree program

1. Academic Master degree

The program is offered to those who are willing to have advanced education in dental subjects, in related biological and physical sciences, in preparation for specialized practice, clinical teaching, or research, and it include the following subjects: Basic science of stomatology, Endodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthodontics, Pediatric Dentistry, Periodontics, Prosthodontics.


2. Professional Master degree

The students involved in this program will be bestowed the professional Master degree after at least 3 years of strict, systemic clinical training and the completion of compulsory course credits as well as clinical research. This program includes the following subjects: Endodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthodontics, Pediatric Dentistry, Periodontics, Prosthodontics. The qualified national resident physician standardization training certificate, the national practitioner license in stomatology, a qualified degree dissertation and defense are required for graduation and the degree certificate.


(5+3)-year program (Bachelor & Master degrees)

The (5+3)-year program is a consecutive professional Master degree program. About 30 students are enrolled each year. The curriculum of the program includes the 5-year Bachelor coursework and training, followed by 3 years of further advanced dental clinical/basic research training. The goal of this program is to train students to become dental specialists as well as clinical scientists in the field of Stomatology. The qualified national resident physician standardization training certificate, the national practitioner license in stomatology, a qualified degree dissertation and defense are required for graduation and the degree certificate.


3-year Doctor degree program

The 3-year Doctor program is designed for those who have strong background in stomatology and related subjects at the university level are expected. Students who enter the program should have a Master Degree. Some financial support is available to qualified students through a competitive review based on their merit. Major areas of study include Basic science of stomatology, Endodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthodontics, Periodontics, Prosthodontics. The curriculum is designed for each student by the doctoral program committee, and includes a series of core courses followed by advanced courses within the school and other schools and colleges in the University. Students must complete a preliminary examination and original research before the production and defense of a dissertation.


(2+3)-year Master & Doctor degree program (Academic Doctor degree)

The (3+3)-year program is a consecutive Doctor degree program. The curriculum of the program includes the 3-year Master training, followed by 3 years of further advanced dental clinical/basic research training. Major areas of study include Basic science of stomatology, Endodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthodontics, Periodontics, Prosthodontics. The curriculum is designed for each student by the doctoral program committee, and includes a series of core courses followed by advanced courses within the school and other schools and colleges in the University. Students must complete a preliminary examination and original research before the production and defense of a dissertation.


(3+3)-year Master & Doctor degree program (Professional Doctor degree)

The (3+3)-year program is a consecutive professional Doctor degree program. The curriculum of the program includes the 3-year Master training, followed by 3 years of further advanced dental clinical/basic research training. 1. 3-year Doctor degree program (Academic degree)

The period of schooling for students is 4 years. The total credits should be more than 16 credits, among which the compulsory courses should be no less than 13 credits.

2. 3-year Doctor degree program (Professional degree)

The period of schooling for students is 3 years. The total credits should be more than 15 credits, among which the compulsory courses should be no less than 12 credits.

3. Consecutive (2+3) year postgraduate and doctor program (Academic degree)

The period of schooling for students is 5 years. The total credits should be more than 40 credits.
